A BRIEF HISTORY:
Between 1661 and 1859, the Vauxhall Pleasure Gardens was the biggest outdoor entertainment space in the UK, offering live concerts, opera, hot air balloons, tightrope walkers, bearded ladies, acrobats, wandering minstrels and massive firework
Amongst the thronging crowds you could find Royalty, rogues, prostitutes and pickpockets. Luminaries such as Pepys, Dickens and Hogarth immortalised the place in writings and paintings but after their 18th century heyday the gardens fell into disrepair when the new railway line carved them in two and cut most of the Gardens off from the Thames.
In 1863, 4 years after the whole site had been sold for a measly £800 the Royal Vauxhall Tavern was built. The RVT immediately became the focal point of the local working class community and music hall and variety acts from all over the country came to perform on it’s stage.
The RVT became the home of camp, bawdy humour and unrivalled cabaret.
During the 80s the RVT launched the careers of Julian Clary and Paul O’Grady as Lily Savage who will often be heard to refer to the Royal Vauxhall Tavern as ‘that little Bijou Wine Bar just south of the Thames.
In recent years the RVT has twice been threatened by developers wanting to turn it into a central London shopping complex. On both occasions the RVT’s loyal customers have fought for it s survival, this included protests outside Lambeth town hall and extensive press campaigns, culminating in 2005 with two local businessmen outbidding developers and ensuring the survival of this landmark venue.
Major reinvestment has built on the legacy of this landmark building which is packed to capacity every weekend, showcasing the best cabaret, performance art and stand-up comedy in London.
